I believe that this is true.
Whatever or whoever causes you to have that pain...You choose to be with them in advance, you chose it before you knew that you would suffer for them.
But if a mother looses her child, if a wife looses her husband, if a boy is orphan I don't think that this counts for them.
It is not faith, it's just being unlucky.
Because faith is combination of many possibilities, it is math...A permutation problem.
